SHREWSBURY JAZZ NETWORK LISTINGS:

JAZZ IN SHROPSHIRE OCTOBER 2017

This is the latest monthly SJN listing for jazz gigs in Shropshire. We try to make sure that all the information we send out in these listings is accurate and up-to-date. However cancellations do happen, we sometimes receive inadequate information and can make mistakes! So if you need to be sure, check for yourselves by telephoning the venues. Venue contacts are listed following the gig listings.

This month’s list includes some fascinating music. As well as our presentation of the superb John Law’s Re-creations (The Hive, Saturday 10), you can hear Gilad Atzmon’s tribute to Coltrane (Hermon Chapel, Friday 22) and Dakhla Brass (The Hatch, Tuesday 19), a unique new band highly rated by Jamie Cullum.  Plus, of course, many other excellent gigs dotted about the county.

British pianist and composer Jonathan Gee has a glowing international reputation, having established highly-rated  trios in New York, Italy and London.  Among many others, he has played with Pharoah Sanders, David Murray, Benny Golson, Art Farmer and Mark Murphy.   His piano work is “precise, lucid and original” with a “ceaseless flow of lyrical ideas…flexibility, resourcefulness and technical command” and a propulsive drive and swing.   Tim Whitehead - one of many stars from the legendary Loose Tubes - has for decades been one of the UK’s best saxophonists: excitingly soulful and melodic with a gorgeous sound. In-demand bassist Nick Pini and the superb Rod Youngs on drums complete the line-up.  Advance booking strongly advised!

SJN GIG OF THE MONTH: ALAN BARNES OCTET - FISH TALES

Alan Barnes (reeds), Neil Yates (trumpet), Dennis Rollins (trombone), Robert Fowler (reeds), Dean Masser (reeds), Pat McCarthy (guitar), Dave Green (bass), John Perry (or Sebastiaan de Krom) drums; and featuring Josie Moon (poet)

The Hive, Belmont, Shrewsbury, 8pm, £18 Under 22’s £9. Tickets from The Hive 01743 234970 or www.hiveonline.org.uk; Pengwern Books 01743 232236

The perennial reedsman returns with an all-star octet - and charismatic poet Josie Moon - to celebrate the rich history of the Grimsby fishing trade, exploring its myths and misadventures.  In the tradition of Alan’s other collaborations with writers, expect wonderful tunes, expertly arranged, superb soloists, humour and emotion.   At least half of the band - dynamic trombonist Dennis Rollins, contrasting saxists Robert Fowler and Dean Masser and guitarist Pat McCarthy - will be appearing at The Hive for the first time.   This should be a unique and entertaining experience.
